Tidepooling

Updated: Jul 17, 2023

Tim headed over this morning for an x-ray. Last night he was playing ultimate frisbee with the kids and he came down on a slippery root and rolled his ankle. I knew it was bad when he limped over. He’d lost his color and was breathing sharply. Kept putting his head between his legs. He calmed down after a bit of rest but once he made it back to the camper just across the street he was shivering like he had a fever. I believe his body was in a bit of shock from the pain. I’ve been there before and I know how it feels to almost pass out from stepping down on your foot so I knew he was really hurting. We got him covered up and some tea, turned the generator on to warm up the camper and iced the foot.

And so what was supposed to be a morning out on the beach tide pooling turned into Tim catching the Daigle’s skiff to Homer for the day to get his ankle checked out. And I tide pooled with the kids instead. Which I kind of don’t really enjoy a whole lot. Tim is the one who know’s the names of all the critters. I’ve been out here so many times I begin to feel like I’ve seen it all and it’s cold and slippery and wet… but it was all new for the kids so I sucked it up and slipped out to the low tidal area with everyone.

Certain periods of the tide are higher or lower than others and these next few days were particularly low (we actually have the second lowest tides in the world after the Bay of Fundi) so people who enjoy this kind of a thing make and effort to get out here rain or shine. And it was not shine today. I had packed hot cocoa to bolster spirits - mostly my own - and we spent the next hour lifting rocks and finding creatures.

I actually ended up enjoying it a lot more than I expected, so here’s to putting a good face on things and having good results. lol. We found several things that I had never seen before which was a nice change. I had no idea what they were but we took pictures so we could figure it out later.

The rest of the day we spent at a friend’s rental that happened to be empty catching up on laundry and showers. It was POURING so we weren’t missing much of anything. The good news is that Tim’s ankle was just a really bad sprain and he was given a splint to get around. The bad news is that insurance companies don’t like it when you leave your home state and we’ll be paying for it out of pocket. Gah.

We cheered ourselves up with pizza on the grill and read books out loud and went to bed… maybe tomorrow it will stop raining…
