Three Weeks Old!

Three weeks is a milestone as all the puppies

have their eyes and ears open and they really begin exploring and developing tiny dog characteristics. They wobble around the pen, still getting used to their growing muscles, and begin to explore. We expanded the “pen” to the entire laundry room to give them a little more space to roam as they become more
curious of their surroundings (and there’s always that adventurous one that manages to squeeze itself between the barriers to get behind the washing machine). I’m anxious to get them into our “puppy barn” that Tim and my boys have been working on for the last several weeks. It’ll be a secure building to house our litters with a fenced yard. I can’t wait! Hopefully they will be in the barn next week sometime. Once they hit 4 weeks, they are really ready for some more space!

Already a few have managed to scramble over the box wall and make their way around. At 3am last night I awoke to a puppy howl that sounded much too loud and found one wandering in the kitchen! Perhaps looking for a midnight snack lol.
But for now we are still enjoying their sweet presence in our home. Honestly, there is nothing more adorable than a teeny, tiny puppy “barking” and “growling” as they try on their growing dogginess. They begin to play with each other as you would see grown dogs play. Chewing on each other’s ears, rolling someone to the ground, tackling, biting. And to see it all in miniature form is so gosh darn cute! Some of them will even work up the courage to bark at us or chew on our pant leg, already showing us some fearless spirit to communicate with the big legs that come and clean up after them every day.

We will begin solid food this week and Lucy is READY for it. She is already giving the pups long breaks and I can see her mournfully staring into the room as the puppies howl for her attention. The volume of her facial expressions crack me up. At this point, she is a bit exhausted from the attack of puppy nails and teeth every time she enters the pen and I can’t say I blame her (I remember those nursing days!). They are ready to be on some food!

Zeke has enjoyed the new distraction and is very ready to romp with his new playmates.
He has been very sweet with them so far, coming in to check on them, cleaning bottoms and milk-covered faces and I’m glad to see he is gentle and loving. Although I have to watch his timing. It’s obnoxious to hear what I thought were sleeping pups suddenly roused awake only to realize Zeke snuck in there and nosed his way into the sleeping pile. Kind of like that older sibling that wakes the baby during nap time!
My children are enjoying chances for more playtime now that the pups are ready for it. And each one always develops their favorite - which makes go home day very hard. But it’s a special 8 weeks of time to have the puppies and we are always glad to have it even though it’s tough to let them go so quickly! Only 2 reservations spots remaining!
