Tuesday, June 27th: ALASKA!

We left Whitehorse this morning a little later than we hoped but everyone was tired - excited to hit Alaska today! We made a quick stop at the Transportation Museum to check out the biggest wind-vane in the world (a retired WWII plane) and headed out.

We thought the Cassiar was bad but the Alaska highway has been terrible! The frost heaves are insanely bad and slowing down for them every little bit is really slowing down our progress. There has also been quite a bit of construction. We may find another route for the ride home… Thankfully everyone seems to be feeling much better today so at least its not causing more tummy upset. Our planned stop, according to my Milepost, is actually no longer a recreational site and is possibly not an option so we’re hoping to push on a little further to camp at at rest area outside of Glennallen, 3 hours north of Anchorage. If we don’t make that hopefully there is a campground that we can stop at… I guess we’ll find out. But we’re looking at about 10 hours on the road today.

We passed Elias’s mountains - the St. Elias Range - which were beautiful. Followed by Kluane Lake which was huge and amazing! We stopped for a brief leg stretch to enjoy the views before moving on.

FINALLY we have reached the Alaskan border! The camper is incredibly dust covered from the miles of gravel stretches. Everything inside the camper is on the floor. Even the cupboards which have sturdy latches flew open on this rough road and things are scattered everywhere.

Thankfully we don’t have much food left so it’s mostly clothing and bedding. The door on the refrigerator lost a shelf from being slammed around and we had to retire the cargo hitch on the back of the camper. At our last stop we realized the coolers were sagging off to one side and a few of the metal bars have snapped. At least the important things are intact. We’ll be stopping in Anchorage tomorrow morning to shop for 2 weeks worth of food to bring over to Seldovia and to do all our laundry.

It’s literally been night by night planning on this trip. Grateful for the Milepost for this portion where I can find rest areas and campgrounds along the way without GPS Google. Last night we didn’t want to drive all the way to the Matanuska Glacier Rec. site so we were glad to find a rest area where other campers were parked. Tomorrow we will be in Homer at an old friend’s! He also saw our travels on Facebook and offered us a place to stay so we’ll be parking at his home until we catch the ferry Thursday morning. Almost there!
