The mosquitoes are CRaZy here! We stopped at the rest area for the night and literally were running around setting up to avoid as many bites as possible and to prevent them from getting into the camper. Some of course still slipped in, but it was better than being outside with the numerous mosquitoes that COVERED the screens of the camper beds. I felt a little bad that we made so much noise that the camper in front of us moved on to another location…oops. It’s 11:30 at night but the sun is still up. Micah commented this morning, “I never saw it get dark?” Yeah, in the summer it’s only ever as dark as a dusky twilight before the sun pops right back up. Makes sleeping a little tricky.
We had glimpses of a glacier as we drove along but we could never seem to find a good view point to see it full on. But we did see a rainbow arching over the highway and end in a mountain.

And then the Matanuska Glacier closer to Palmer was amazing!

Spirits were high as we all knew today was the day where at least the long hours of driving would end in Homer. The roads were better as we reached more largely populated areas like Palmer and soon Anchorage where we stop for a Costco run, refuel and laundry AGAIN (it’s just ridiculous how much laundry we create). We filled up two more carts of food at Walmart and somehow managed to get it all into the camper.

I sort of “sketched out” out every meal we might have while we were across the bay and tried to keep it to canned and dried goods as much as possible so I could buy specifically what I needed and save space and fit it all in the fridge. I had plenty of time on my hands in the car… Seldovia groceries are so high that I know I will want to avoid buying anything unless it’s an emergency.
6240 miles...

Everyone is feeling mostly better. It’s a little discouraging to come into Anchorage and find it cast over with dark clouds and the rain just keeps coming down. It made the usually beautiful ride past Turnagain Arm and down to Homer a bit of a bummer because you couldn’t really see much besides mountains getting lost in the clouds. It cleared a little as we came into Homer thankfully, just a light drizzle. I had connected with our friend Ashton in Homer to ask if we could camp at his place tonight and we are excited to see him and meet his wife, Amanda and his three little ones and to see their little homestead. We’re getting closer…
